Principal's Monthly Newsletter Message, April 2014

A new Monte Vista is on its way:

The information you have probably already heard is factual!
The Monte Vista you have known since 1948 is coming down,
to be rebuilt and opened anew in August of 2015.
Such wonderful news comes with some strings attached,
however. I will be holding specific meetings in the weeks
to come to give you as much information as I have as plans
for the upcoming year and the transition to the new school
develop. Right now the plans are in development so I am relying on you to recognize that some things will change as the first day of the next school year, August 4th approaches. Hopefully we all can stay flexible and positive through this challenging transition year.

Since Monte Vista is to be rebuilt on its present site, it necessitates that we move our children during the year of construction. Through a shifting of classrooms at other sites, Monte Vista will be able to divide our current student population between three other sites. Monte Vista’s kindergarten through third grade, plus our fourth grade ELD classroom will be assigned to the Papago West site (2013 N. 36th St.). The remainder of fourth grade, our fifth grade classrooms and VE classroom will be housed at Gateway School (1100 North 35th St.). Finally, sixth grade through eighth grades will be assigned to Larry C. Kennedy (2702 E. Osborn).

Recognizing the distances from Monte Vista to these three locations, the Creighton District has put a plan in place to assure the safe transfer of our students. All our children, 100%, will be transported by Creighton District buses. With this large influx of students, it does necessitate another transition for next year. Monte Vista’s start and end time will need to be altered in order to accomplish this transportation task! Our schedule for students to be in their classrooms for start of day will be 8:40 and then end their day at 4:15.

Rest assured that even with this disruption, Monte Vista will be providing your children with the same instruction you have come to expect. Music, Art, P.E., and technology will continue to be provided, though the format may be changed somewhat. Each of the new receiving sites have jumped in to help provide further services for our Monte Vista students. Site nurses will be available to all our children. Our main office will be moved to Papago West and will still be available by phone or for drop in service. My Asst. Principal and myself will still be available for meetings and emergencies. Each receiving site will have a Monte Vista staff member in charge to help expedite the unexpected needs of any of our children. We recognize that possibly having children at more than one site may be a concern. We will do all we can to minimize those concerns.

As you can see, many changes are coming and we’ll need to communicate. Please be looking for fliers in the weeks to come where I will be scheduling specific question and answer opportunities to help you be ready for next year! Together we will make this happen smoothly! As the new year approaches (early August) we will also be providing an opportunity for you to visit your child’s new site to verify their location and specific classroom. If you have any specific concerns or questions, please attend a meeting as they become available.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Principal Mike Madison
